Tender Care Tips for Your Child’s Sensitive Skin

How often do kids need a bath?
Many kids have sensitive skin, and it’s more common than you might think. A 2020 survey of over 600 moms found that more than half said their children had sensitive skin. Kids with sensitive skin are much more likely to experience dryness and eczema. Over 10% of children in the U.S. have eczema, which is a medical condition that makes skin look red and feel itchy and bumpy. Eczema should be treated by a dermatologist, but parents and caregivers can manage children’s dry skin at home with the right care.
Dry skin can have many causes, but a big one is too much bathing with a harsh soap. Surprisingly, different doctors give different advice. Nationwide Children’s Hospital tells you to bathe your kids once a day, but Yale Medicine advises a bath only as needed for hygiene. Seattle Children’s Hospital says that kids should avoid all soaps because they can be irritating, especially bubble bath. Perhaps the best advice is given by the American Academy of Dermatology, which suggests bathing younger kids once or twice a week. For tweens and teens, the advice is for children to wash their face twice a day.

Mild and clean products are best for sensitive skin
Children with sensitive skin are especially vulnerable to skin irritation from soaps. Soaps can remove natural moisturizing oils from the skin and cause skin irritation. Most doctors say that you should bathe your child in lukewarm water with mild cleansers. Steer clear of products with fragrances or harsh chemicals such as sulfates.
