How we created Everyday Face & Body Wash

 

Many children have rashes or dry skin from time to time.  It can even be a persistent problem.  When our daughter had a dry rash on her arms, we looked for a child-friendly moisturizer for her.  We also wanted a product that was natural and sustainable.  That turned out to be too much to ask.  No such products were available!  Because we have a professional background in skin care products, we decided to make our own: Nuthatch Naturals® Daily Soothing Lotion.

The Daily Soothing Lotion has been very successful, with great reviews on our website and on Amazon.  So we started thinking: what other skin care products do kids with dry skin need?  Children who are prone to allergies often react to products with harsh cleansers and synthetic fragrances.  Many children’s soaps fall into this category.  So we decided to make something better – a very gentle, 100% natural cleanser: the Everyday Face & Body Wash.

Clearly the new cleanser would have to follow Nuthatch Naturals® core values:

Designing a certified biobased formula

The challenge in developing a natural cleanser is to obtain the USDA Certified 100% Biobased label.  There are only a few other cleansers on the market that meet this high standard.  It means that all the ingredients are derived from plants.  This is not easy to achieve because traditional soaps are all petroleum-based.  We found a plant-based soap for our product.  Then we added other plant-based ingredients to make a very mild but effective cleanser.

One of the challenges in formulating the certified 100% biobased cleanser was that many ingredient manufacturers don’t offer information on how natural their ingredients are.  They may say that an ingredient is natural, but it may not be 100% natural.  We found that out the hard way when we sent our formula for biobased testing and it came back as 99% biobased.  We had to find the ingredient that was not biobased and develop a new formula.  Thankfully, after lots of hard work, the new formula was certified as 100% biobased.

 

Passing clinical safety tests with flying colors

For a children’s wash, it’s important that it doesn’t irritate the skin and eyes.  We did a skin irritation test with 50 people, and none experienced any irritation.  We also tested for eye safety.  All of the test results are available to our customers.*

A sustainable product also needs to be in sustainable packaging.  However, the only sustainable packaging options are glass or metal bottles.  We felt that neither of those were suitable for children.  What if the glass cracks and there are sharp edges?  The packaging for the natural wash is a recyclable plastic that is soft so customers can squeeze the product out.  We encourage our customers to recycle the bottles when they’re done!

Now that the Everyday Face & Body Wash is ready and available for sale, what are people saying?  Customers love it, with a near perfect average rating.  One customer said that “the Everyday Face & Body Wash for Kids is a fantastic choice for parents.”  And that “despite being free from common allergens, it still manages to cleanse well, leaving no residue behind.” Another said that “this is a great soap for kids’ gentle skin, especially during the dry winter months.”  Hearing this feedback made us so happy – mission accomplished!
