The advanced ingredient technology in Everyday Face & Body Wash
When we created our Nuthatch Naturals Everyday Face & Body Wash, we wanted a cleanser that is gentle on children’s skin and also as natural and planet-friendly as possible. Our children’s cleanser is now the only mild and gentle certified biobased wash formula on the market. All other hand and body washes have at least one ingredient that is petroleum-based, adding to the amount of fossil fuel-derived chemicals going into shower drains. Over time those add up!
We believe strongly that synthetic, non-biodegradable chemicals should not be disposed down the shower drain. Many times those chemicals are made from crude oil or natural gas, which are non-renewable – single use materials. To us, that is a lot like using a disposable plastic bag to bring your groceries home and discarding it after use. To children, using disposable materials feels like a step back to the 20th century.
Yet all other shower and bath products contain petroleum/crude oil or natural gas-based ingredients. Looking at the ingredient lists of common shower products, one finds sulfates, acrylates, silicones, and polyquaterniums, among others (check your favorite shower gel!). These ingredients deliver great foaming and cleansing as well as excellent skin feel, but they are not renewable. Moreover, often they persist in the environment because they don’t biodegrade.
The Nuthatch Naturals body wash is USDA Certified 100% biobased. This means that it has zero ingredients that are derived in full or in part from fossil fuels – crude oil and natural gas. It’s not easy to design a body wash without any of the common ingredients mentioned above, and indeed the performance suffers in some respects. Renewable sugar-based soaps such as glucosides don’t foam as well as sulfates, and consumers often think that foaming means cleansing. But they cleanse well and are much milder on skin, a big consideration for our wash which is made for young children.
Combined with our Daily Soothing Lotion, the Everyday Face & Body Wash makes up the only certified 100% biobased skin care regimen on the market. We screened every single ingredient for biobased content and used only the ones that had no fossil fuel components at all. This meant a lot of test formulas had to be discarded, because some ingredients contributed synthetic material. We explained our methods in a technical article in a trade journal.
For children’s personal care products, fully natural ingredients are much preferred. Children’s skin is different – it dries out more easily and is more sensitive to harsh cleansers. Biobased ingredients are milder and more gentle on their skin. There is also a lower risk of irritation from harsh processing chemistry, which may produce reactive impurities such as 1,4-dioxane. For kids who bathe daily, lower exposure to such chemicals is critically important.
